Omexom responsible for the General Electrical Installations at the Arregota Nova Substation

Substations

The new substation strengthens the distribution network along the Alentejo coast. As the system integrator, Omexom was responsible for the detailed design, installation and testing.

Located in the municipality of Grândola, E-REDES’ Arregota Nova Substation transforms high-voltage electricity (60 kV) into medium voltage (30 kV) for distribution throughout the region. It has an initial installed capacity of 20 MVA and serves around 3,700 residential customers and 46 businesses. The substation improves the quality of service across the municipality’s medium-voltage network and provides backup supply capacity for Alcácer do Sal and Santiago do Cacém.

As the system integrator, Omexom was responsible for the General Electrical Installations, including detailed design, the supply of complementary materials and equipment, installation and testing. In the outdoor switchyard, the team installed the 60 kV bay, completed the connections to the power transformer and the 30 kV switchgear, which supplies five outgoing feeders, and installed the capacitor bank. In the control building, the team installed the control and monitoring cabinets, auxiliary services and the building’s electrical systems, from lighting to fire and intrusion detection.

A substation brings together equipment from multiple manufacturers and several different contractors, from civil works to protection systems. Omexom was responsible for integrating these elements, from the earthing network to the control and monitoring power supplies, and for testing each circuit before commissioning.

The substation is equipped with automation and remote monitoring systems and is designed to accommodate future expansions, supporting the growth in electricity demand across the region.
